Eve Teasing: A Serious Threat

Eve Teasing: A threat to the growing society

What makes me write about this topic? I am neither a girl nor am I physically puny (to be frank, I have a pretty imposing physique). Well the reason is more powerful than those cited above, I am the member of the society as well as the citizen of India and I strongly feel that eve teasing is more than just teasing, whose meaning is cited as follows in the Oxford dictionary:

teasing: -v, make fun of playfully, unkindly or annoyingly; irritate.

I am sure that the girls will agree with me that the current situation of eve-teasing is far more than just making fun. It has turned into a form of harassment. I am a brother of an 18 year old sister, who will be going to college soon. I live in the heart of Delhi and believe me that there are thousands of cases of eve-teasing that is reported every day, so much so that you’ll always find one or two Delhi Police vehicles near a college especially if its a Women’s college (I live
near one, so I am a witness). At this juncture of time, my family and I are concerned of how to provide my sister a maximum protection, they think of only sending her to a very near by, that to women’s college, forget about sending her outside Delhi (if you think that my parents come in category of “WORRIED”, well they are not as they sent me, without a second thought to a place 3000km away from home to one of the most remote places in India :) ).

Mentally strong girls overcome this harassment very quickly, but what about the weak ones, I recently came to know that in Kerala they don’t even spare girls who have not reached their teens. This is the condition, and we are ready to decorate ourselves with the adjectives like, “Next Super Power”, “World Leader” etc. In this era, women are contributing immensely to the growth of the country in countless fields, and this is what they get in return, there is no mental
peace, there is so much worry as to what will happen if they’ll step outside the house. I’ve had the privilege to travel across India, and to meet people of different places, and I have discovered that there is no place in India where a girl can go out fearless, strong and with only one thing in her mind, to RULE the world!

This is for the boys (girls can read), we at some point of time if not now will be related to a girl in someway or the other, as a friend, as a brother, as a uncle, as a father, as a husband, or even as a citizen India, don’t you feel that situation is getting worse. If we stand together, we can stop this, what has turned out to be a social evil before it becomes a national problem, because eve-teasing is just the beginnings, the teasers can go really bad later. Now teaser turn into
future criminals, seeking to more deadly form of crimes, do we want this to happen?

I came across this very interesting advertisement on eve teasing produced by AAJ TAK.

What the girls should do about this? Ignore? No, because if you ignore today, someone else might pay the price. Its really hard to understand the psychology of eve-teasers and criminals that indulge in women related crimes, so its better to call helplines or inform the police. Police of many states have launched helpline for women who are victims of eve-teasing. Delhi Police is starting a helpline against eve-teasing . Women who want to inform police about such incidents can dial 011-27894455 . The helpline started operating  on 29th Dec 2008, and has been a great success. In Kerala no such helpline has been launched, check this link.

Please do see this page on wikipedia about eve teasing.

To curb such a social evil, there is no other way but to stand together against this hold the bull by the horns, and not ignore (thats what the public does at times), because its very clear that a girl/women being eve-teased may not be able to contact the helpline, in that case its Us who should help.

Together WE CAN and Together WE WILL!

  1. I was wondering what would happen if Indian girls used pepper spray to protect themselves from these unwanted male advances? Honestly, I find it disgusting that men in our culture think its funny and cute to sexually harrass women. Then again, India has a long way to go in terms of female equality. When I last went to India about nine years ago, I was shocked to see the wording of some of the job advertisments in the reputed Indian newspapers. Some of the employers didn’t even bother to disguise their ill intentions and clearly demanded that women responding to the ad for the job posting be good looking, young and fair skinned. What the hell? I wondered if they were looking for female employees or hookers? I am glad that people like you are talking about these issues affecting us Indian women and hopefully the current chauvinistic attitutdes towards women in India will change. I wonder if I am going to need a gun next time I visit India :P ?

    • If indian girls(even women) use pepper spray to protect themselves, you might see lot of blind Indians by the time you come back next. I am really sorry I did not touch upon the advertisement part. But what you say is absolutely true. The problem is even if we are advancing in lots of field but the problem is our mentality towards women has not changed.

I think you should bring a gun :)

  2. We r going to do a project about the measures that can be taken to control eve teasing. Can u tell me the places where generally this happens and what Government must do fo this?

    • Well this is a common problem in all the states. Near to colleges, trains and buses this incidence is common. For the government we can have many suggestions which may pertain to reduce or eliminate this sort of social evil. We can start by having a police van near colleges (as I’ve mentioned in the post, this is a common thing in Delhi). Helplines are anyway open.

What can be done is improving reaction time for getting to the scene from where the compliant was filed using the helpline. Secondly, there are many girls who are not aware of such helplines. Thirdly, even if they are aware, they might not be in a situation to call, in such cases carrying a pepper spray or red chili spray will be useful. Please think about this a bit more

  3. its not a big deal.even women enjoy.they expose so that somebody approach them they alike being touched or…
