Configuring Evolution Mail For GMail using IMAP

Evolution Client Mail configuration for GMail using IMAP

In this tutorial I am going to show you how to configure the Evolution Client Mail for GMail using IMAP.

For those of you who do not know about IMAP. It stands for Internet Message Access Protocol and hence as you’ll see be used to configure the reception of the mail that will come in your GMail mailbox. Unlike POP3 which is also one of the protocol for the same purpose IMAP assumes e-mail will remain on the server(in this case its the Google Mail Sever) indefinitely in multiple mailboxes, making it possible for you to access your mails without your Laptop or Desktop directly from the server.

Enough said, lets get things rolling. For configuration you’ll need to follow the following set of simple steps of the Wizard that generally starts when you start evolution client mail for the first time. If however you already have configured an account previously we still can do this by selecting Edit—->Preferences from the menu bar of the Evolution Client Mail and then selecting the “Add” option on the right hand, after this the old wizard reappears

Step 1:
We need to first enable the IMAP in the GMail setting.

Step2:

In the next window select the Server type as IMAP and set the following information about the server:

Server: imap.gmail.com:993, where 993 is the
port number

Username: Give your email ID here like yourname@gmail.com

Use SSL encryption for security

Step 5:

MC5
Set the receiving options as per your requirement.

Step 6:

MC6 Now we’ve finished the IMAP settings, we’ll configure sending settings. We’ll use the smtp.gmail.com server via TLS. Again, you should note that the username is your full gmail address.

Step 7: Pick a name for your account. Any name will do. After that we are done.

  1. It works! Thanks.

  2. Lucky if you can send anything without a dedicated SMPT port

    > smtp.gmail.com:587

  3. ok, but why doesn’t Evolution ask for my email password? (Gmail IMAP)

  4. This does not work for me. I always get the “authentication required” error when sending. Receiving works fine.
